Threats and Protection

Suspected Threats to Bank Swallows

  • Declines in food supply (insects)
  • Loss of roost and nest sites
  • Burrow destruction; disturbance of adults and young at colonies
  • Weather and climate events, especially hurricanes during fall migration
  • Pesticide use on breeding and wintering grounds
  • In 2013, the Committee on the Status of Endangered Wildlife in Canada (COSEWIC) assessed the Bank Swallow as Threatened, indicating the species is likely to become endangered if nothing is done to reverse the factors causing declines.

    In Ontario, Bank Swallows are provincially listed as Threatened.
