Threats and Protection

Suspected Threats to Barn Swallows

  • Declines in food supply (insects)
  • Loss of roost and nest sites
  • Nest destruction; disturbance of adults and young
  • Weather and climate events, especially hurricanes during fall migration
  • Pesticide use on breeding and wintering grounds
  • In 2011, the Committee on the Status of Endangered Wildlife in Canada (COSEWIC) assessed the Barn Swallow as Threatened, indicating it's likely to become endangered if nothing is done to reverse factors causing declines.
